While all K-pop agencies have their flaws, HYBE—the conglomerate housing BTS, the biggest boy band in the world—has been the target of significant backlash. BTS Suga
Despite multiple apologies, the false accusations surrounding BTS’ SUGA riding (not driving) an e-scooter under the influence were blown out of proportion. Although the rapper himself provided a clear explanation of the incident, South Korean media shared fabricated CCTV footage that turned out to involve someone else. Additionally, they released a fake blood alcohol content level of 0.227%, a detail that has never been officially confirmed.
HYBE vs Min Hee Jin
One of the most prominent controversies of the year was the fallout between HYBE and the CEO of the company under them ADOR – Min Hee Jin. The scandal revealed a series of startling revelations, culminating in Min Hee Jin’s resignation and departure from the company, which K-pop fans loved.
BLACKPINK’s Jennie
The idol found herself embroiled in controversy after being spotted vaping indoors at a fashion event in Italy. While the act of smoking itself drew some attention, it was her blowing the smoke in her stylist’s face that sparked widespread outrage. Although she promptly apologized, the incident triggered heated debates across online platforms. The controversy intensified days later when, during a Harper’s BAZAAR interview, she addressed the incident and her apology, stating, “What can I do? If Korean people think it’s wrong, I’ve got to make up for it.” This remark further fueled the backlash, leaving fans and the public divided.

One of the biggest controversy from South Korea, but someone the Korean media tried to burry this news was that of NCT’s Taeil, who was removed from his group and agency on the grounds of rape. He was investigated for aggravated quasi-rape after allegations he and others sexually assaulted an intoxicated woman in June. This left fans and the public in disbelief with many from the fandom even burning his pictures.

The idol made headlines after permanently leaving the boy group just days after the agency confirmed he would be rejoining following a lengthy hiatus. The 21-year-old artist reportedly decided to leave to protect the feelings of his fellow members and fans. While Korean fans argue that his actions have tarnished the group’s reputation, international supporters contend that he is being subjected to bullying.
NewJeans leave ADOR
In a somewhat expected turn of events, NewJeans announced they had terminated their contracts with ADOR and HYBE. However, what has everyone talking is that the group chose to disclose the termination through a press conference rather than taking legal action to publicly sever ties with ADOR. The agency, however, maintains that the girls are still under contract, claiming no official termination has occurred, which has led to significant confusion. Adding to the uncertainty, the group also launched a new Instagram account under a different name.
