NewJeans Blocked From Independent Activities Without ADOR Permission, Court Orders 1 Billion KRW Penalty Per Violation
Court’s ruling on ADOR’s injunction request
On May 30, Korean media reported that the 52nd Civil Affairs Department of the Seoul Central District Court partially granted ADOR’s request for an injunction. The move was to preserve its existing contract status with NewJeans and prohibiting it from signing separate advertising agreements. They’d need the company’s consent until a first-instance ruling is made regarding the validity of their exclusive contract.
Penalty for NewJeans
The decision also stated that that if the band fails to do so, it would levy a penalty clause that requires NewJeans to pay 1 billion KRW ($730,000 approx) to ADOR in damages per violation. In that case, NewJeans will also have to bear the legal costs of the application. As per the court, its decision aims to maintain the status quo during the ongoing legal dispute between the two sides over the legitimacy of their exclusive contract, which NewJeans terminated from its end in November 2024.
“The debtor, NJZ, must not engage in entertainment activities independently or through a third party without ADOR’s prior approval or consent until the first trial verdict on the contract’s validity is announced,” the court said, as reported by Koreaboo.
Previous court ruling in NewJans Vs ADOR
This comes after the court’s previous ruling on March 21, 2025, when it fully accepted ADOR’s request for an injunction in order to stop NewJeans from signing contracts outside the agency. It even rejected the group’s following objection to the decision a month later, and reaffirmed its stand.
Meanwhile, ADOR’s lawsuit over the validity of its contract is ongoing apart from the injunction decision. The oral argument is scheduled to take place on June 5.
