After a Seoul court ruled against NewJeans in their attempt to end their contract with HYBE’s ADOR, pop icon Kesha reached out with empathy. On October 30, 20205, she posted on X, “My heart is with you NewJeans,” along with a red heart emoji. Her message came just a day after the girl group’s lawsuit loss, which left fans worried about the future of the “Super Shy” singers.
Kesha relates to the troubles of a lawsuit in a company, as she spent nearly a decade trapped in a similar legal struggle with her former producer, Dr. Luke. Back in 2014, Kesha accused him of sexual assault and emotional abuse, while he countersued for defamation. Despite public support from stars like Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson, she was forced to continue making music under the same label. However, in 2023, both parties reached a resolution before the defamation trial took place.

NewJeans have tried to move forward, even teasing a rebrand as NJZ and releasing music independently. However, HYBE’s ADOR blocked them through an injunction that stops them from releasing music as long as they remain under their contract. Due to this, Kesha’s support message feels personal, like a sign of one artist recognizing the struggle for freedom. The quintet will continue their legal fight by appealing to the court. After the verdict was announced, the group informed through their lawyers that they “respect the court’s judgment, but it is impossible to return to this company and continue normal entertainment activities in the current situation where the trust relationship with ADOR is completely shattered.”
